Coco Loves Her Curly Hair
Coco is a creative and adventurous little black girl with a head full of coils and kinks. In this charming tale, she discovers the amazing versatility and excitement of having a mane of natural hair. Twists, curls, colour…so many choices but how will she decide which style to wear each day?
Coco loves her curly hair is an enchanting celebration of the countless possibilities, wonder and magic of afro hair. At its heart, it celebrates black hair as beauty - not burden - and unfolds the joy of embracing all that you are.
Boldly illustrated
With the book’s bold hues and warm tones, representation never looked so good. Each page is crowned with the grandeur, glory and detail of kinks and curls that are often missed out in children’s books.
The strong visuals combine charming illustrations and unbounded optimism to bring Coco and her hair to life. Extra attention has been taken to the caramel and chocolate hues of melanin as well as afro hair.
In soft lines and compelling colour, the artwork underscores the core message of the book; that nothing is more beautiful than being yourself.
Inspirational
The book is a fist-bump and high-five to little black naturalista’s everywhere. Coco’s story is an overdue ode to black girls hoping to find a way to be themselves.
Books play an important role in shaping children’s lives : these stories and characters will affect how they see themselves and the world around them, their motivation to read, and their aspirations to become authors and illustrators of the future.
Designed to empower

Start their self-love journey early
Did you know, low self-esteem and lack of confidence often follow children into their teens and adulthood? However children who feel loved, accepted and happy with who they are, often become confident and fulfilled adults.
We are building a world without hair discrimination and that starts with children seeing themselves and their communities in the books they read.

Meet the Author
Coco loves her hair was created by author Colleen Dixon. As a UK -registered pharmacist, Colleen understands the science of healing. In this new collection, she creates a fun and heartfelt tale for the art of healing and becoming who you really are.
Like most little black girls, her natural hair journey began at the feet of her mother where every Sunday was ‘hair day’. She dreaded this because natural hair “felt like such hard work” and as a result, Colleen struggled to really love and embrace her hair.
This changed in 2011 where she started learning how to take care of her hair and launched a natural hair blog and YouTube channel. “Natural hair became an adventure for me – I realised I could have it in a twist-out, mini-twists, threaded, in an up-do or a blow out…the possibilities were endless. It was then that I had that light bulb moment of…’wow, afro hair really is magic’. I wish I’d known this earlier – that black hair is a beauty - not a burden.”
It was out of this revelation that Coco loves was born. “I’m writing for every child who spent hours getting their hair braided or styled each week and hated it. And for every child who feels different and just wants to be themselves”.
“In a way, this book is my whisper to the world saying: ‘Black is beautiful…look, let me show you!’ ”
